Protection of the constitution (Counter-Subversion)

The Security Service works to protect Sweden's domestic security. We do this by preventing and detecting illegal activities which, through the use of violence, threat or force, seek to alter Sweden's form of government, influence the decision-making process of authorities or political bodies, or prevent citizens from exercising their constitutional rights and freedoms.
The democratic form of government is defined by three primary processes comprising political decision-making, the implementation of political decisions and public debate. The Security Service documents and analyses threats against these processes. Our task is to protect the rights of elected representatives, officials and journalists to exercise their professions. We also protect the constitutional rights and freedoms of individual citizens to take part in the public debate.

Further to this, we prevent and detect unlawful pressure involving e.g. harassment, threats or violence aiming to influence the exercise of public authority. The Service also documents and counters domestic extremist environments, which may pose a threat to democracy. This work serves to expand our knowledge in the area of criminal activities specifically targeting Sweden's form of government, critical functions of society, and the constitutional rights and freedoms of individual citizens.

We also occasionally conduct criminal investigations in this field, although such investigations are usually carried out by local police authorities, to which we lend assistance in the form of expertise, forensic computer examinations and analyses.
