The Swedish Security Service is tasked with protecting Sweden and Swedish democracy against society-threatening crime. This work focuses on the functions and systems that are particularly critical for a democracy. We document and counter unlawful pressure against elected representatives of the people, employees in the judiciary and representatives of free speech.
We do this in collaboration with Swedish police authorities, other government agencies and interest organisations.
Unlawful pressure
Unlawful pressure is an umbrella term for harassment, threat, force and corruption aiming to influence decision-makers. This may involve everything from stalking, veiled threats or criminal damage to serious crimes such as assault, bomb attacks or attempted murder. There are in Sweden several organisations and groups who use unlawful pressure for financial gain. Many such attempts are orchestrated by serious organised crime. Victims often include representatives of the judiciary or other authorities, but also media representatives and politicians. In the long run, this type of crime may undermine the basic principles of our society and our democracy.
