Protection measures

Each decision regarding the deployment and nature of protection measures is based on a threat assessment. Protection measures range from informing the relevant police authority that an event will take place in their geographical area to providing close protection in combination with police presence.
Protection measures may also be in the form of information and advice, sometimes in combination with technical protection measures, such as the installation of locks and alarms, or a bomb search.

Division of responsibilities

The protection measures taken may be the responsibility of the Security Service, or of another police authority. The Security Service is responsible for:
  • Decisions on the overall design of close-range protection and protection from a distance
  • Contacts with the protectee or his or her representatives
  • Information to the applicable police authority concerning threats, risks and the itinerary of the protectee
  • Information and instructions to the police officers participating in the assignment
  • Technical protection measures
  • Operational management of the close-range protection

Police authorities are responsible for the protection from a distance, comprising police presence on location and along routes to and from location, police escort and some protective surveillance.

When the assignment is completed, the police authorityr reports back to the Security Service.
