Intensive investigation into the terrorist attack

2011-02-10 |
The Swedish Security Service has now been investigating the 11 December 2010 terrorist attack for 60 days. In this comprehensive investigation, nearly 1000 tips have been received from the public, approximately 700 interrogations have been held and several hundred objects have been examined.
The investigation will be continued until:
  • the technical intelligence-gathering and follow-up analyses are completed,
  • the results of various analyses from the National Laboratory of Forensic Science (SKL) are received and compiled,
  • every conceivable lead on possible accomplices and accessories to the crime has been followed up, and
  • the investigation into the bomber´s radicalization process, and into any of his activities that are linked to the attack, has been carried out as thoroughly as possible.

Crime scene analysis

The examination of the objects found at the crime scenes is being carried out at the National Laboratory of Forensic Science. Several hundred objects are being examined there, and the results are continually being received and assessed as part of the ongoing investigation.

No conclusive information on accessories to the crime

Although there is nothing to indicate that the bomber had accessories, the investigators have not ruled out this possibility.

Information on warnings

At the time of the attack, there were media reports that a public official had received advance knowledge that something would happen on Drottninggatan on 11 December 2010. The Security Service cannot make further comments on these media claims and because the information was given to a journalist, it is source-protected. The media claims are, however, being investigated.

Continued work

The Security Service is aware of the fact that interest in the investigation is great. We will continue to keep the public updated as much as possible, without violating the secrecy applying to the ongoing investigation. We appreciate the interest in this case and all the tips we have received from the public. Any tips concerning this case can be called in to the Police “Tipstelefon" (Hotline) on 114 14.

Threat level unchanged

At this point in time, there is no information prompting a change to the terrorist threat level in Sweden. The threat level was raised from low to elevated on 1 October 2010. The threat level is continuously re-assessed by the National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment (NCT).

Swedish Counter-Terrorism Cooperative Council

Since the terrorist attack on 11 December, the Swedish Counter-Terrorism Cooperative Council has played an important role in the exchange of information between the 14 authorities that comprise the council. As early as 12 December, the heads of these authorities met to establish a common approach. This created the conditions necessary for the authorities to take the necessary measures under their respective mandate areas.

In 2010 the Swedish Counter-Terrorism Cooperative Council worked on establishing a strategy to govern cooperation between authorities. A matter of importance is strengthening the capacity of authorities to cooperate more efficiently and effectively on terrorist-related incidents.
