A 43-year-old Swedish national of Moroccan origin was killed in a firefight with US forces in northern Iraq in early October, according to information from US authorities. It had been suspected for some time that the man was part of the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq. He was known to the Swedish Security Service for his activities in Islamist circles in Sweden prone to violence.
The man has previously been suspected of involvement in terrorist attacks and was a combatant in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the 1990s. In December 2006 he was entered on the UN and EU “terror lists", and his assets have been frozen since then. His suspected role in the al-Qaida in Iraq has been assessed not to constitute a threat to Sweden or Swedish interests.
