Erik Widstrand of the Stockholm County Police said the police had been called to Drottninggatan at 16.50 local time after reports of a car being set on fire. Shortly after, the police received further reports of an injured person lying in nearby Bryggargatan.
— The police were on the scene quickly and the fire was put out. The person on Bryggargatan was found dead at the scene. A few people received minor injuries as a result of the blast and were taken to hospital, said Erik Widstrand of the Stockholm County Police.
Erik Widstrand also appealed to the public for information relating to the incident and asked anyone with information to contact the information centre set up at Drottninggatan or to phone the police on 114 14. He also confirmed that the police presence in the capital would be increased in the wake of the incident.
Anders Thornberg confirmed that the Swedish Security Service had been working closely with the Stockholm County Police from an early stage but would now take over the investigation.
— This is a very serious incident which is being investigated as an act of terrorism. As of 09.00 local time on Sunday 12 December the investigation will therefore be taken over by the Swedish Security Service. We will use all of the resources at our disposal to drive the investigation forward and to prevent any further incidents, said Anders Thornberg, Director of Operations at the Swedish Security Service.
Anders Thornberg also said that Swedish Security Service was not currently planning to raise the threat level in Sweden but that this would be kept under constant review.
