Prevention is paramount

A terrorist attack may have a huge impact on society as well as on the individual. Preventive work is therefore paramount in order to avoid terrorist attacks in Sweden or abroad.
This preventive work is carried out in the form of intelligence work; i.e. gathering, processing and analysis of information. The analyses provide us with better knowledge about the activities, plans and capacity of violence-prone extremists.

Terrorists are prevented from visiting or settling in Sweden

Another element of this work concerns preventing foreign citizens who actively support terrorism from visiting or settling in Sweden. We carry out this work in collaboration with the Migration Board and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

The Swedish Security Service checks some of the persons who have applied for a visa, Swedish citizenship or a residence permit. The purpose of these checks is to assess whether the persons may pose a security threat. Our assessments are then forwarded to the Migration Board or the Ministry of Justice who decide on whether an application is to be granted or denied.

These checks are carried out on request by the Migration Board or the Ministry of Justice, but may also be performed on our own initiative. Should we receive information stating that a certain person is in Sweden or on their way here, we contact the authority concerned to inform them that we would like to comment on that person´s application.
